Every purchase helps donate valuable hours to supporting and training the Australian youth living on the streets
Over the last year an amazing collaborative cookbook project, called “Friends of STREAT”, has been
gathering steam in the kitchens of some of Melbourne’s and Australia’s best chefs and restaurants.
Chefs like Rebecca Ng and Karen Baston of Magic Mountain and Cookie, Robin Wickens from the
Royal Mail Hotel, Alla Wolf-Tasker AM from The Lake House, Joel Anderson from Hotel Windsor,
Matt Lane of Mamasita, Adriano Zumbo of Zumbo, John McLeay and Noah Crowcroft of Red Spice
Road, Shane Delia of Maha and many more. Andrew McConnell’s stunning ‘Earl Grey Ice Cream’
dish serves up a mouth-watering cover shot.
The legendary Jacques Reymond, the book's ambassador,
wrote, “From my young days in France, hungry and poor
and working shift after shift to survive, I can relate to
today’s troubled and homeless youth – and just say thank
goodness for people like Rebecca Scott and all the team at
her rapidly expanding non-profit STREAT.”
Scott, recently named Victoria’s Local Hero for 2016, led
the project which has now produced an absolutely
brilliant 320+ page, hard-cover cookbook. It features the
recipes and heart-warming home stories of all 45 chefs
and the heart-breaking stories of five amazing young
people who have rebuilt their lives through the STREAT
program. The book is dedicated to those five and the
many hundreds more that have been helped by STREAT.
STREAT is a Melbourne-based social enterprise that empowers disadvantaged and homeless youth
through life-skills support and vocational training in the hospitality industry. From very humble
beginnings in 2010 STREAT now operates five cafes and catering and coffee roasting businesses.
The purchases of its now over 1.25 million customers have funded 38,000 hours of training and
support and helped keep over 450 young people off Melbourne’s streets. Each cookbook sold will
fund another 30 minutes! The book is a major fundraiser for STREAT’s huge new training centre
(and cafe, artisan bakery, roastery, catering kitchen and event space) in Collingwood, which will
enable STREAT to double the current number of trainees in their programs – to 250 per year.
The project would not have succeeded without the fantastic talents and vision of Smudge
Publishing, who conceived, designed and produced the book, and of STREAT’s major corporate
partners: SEEK, Devondale, Brookfield Multiplex, Murray River Organics, Social Ventures Australia
and the GPT Group – who collectively pre-purchased 2100 customised copies sight unseen!
